The 5-Question Hair Diagnosis That Finally Made Sense of My Curls

Forget abstract diagrams of hair strands. The questions that actually reveal your porosity are the ones about what your hair does when you're standing under the water.

I spent four years and, if I'm being honest, probably close to $800 on hair products before someone asked me one simple question.

'When you step into the shower, how long does it take your hair to get wet?'

I paused. I had never thought about it. It just... took a while. I'd learned to work the water through my hair. I assumed everyone did that.

They don't.

That moment — that single, behavioral question about something I experienced every week — told a curly hair specialist more about my hair than three years of product trials had managed to reveal.

That's the idea behind the Hairodia 5-question diagnosis.

Why Behavioral Questions Work

Most hair quizzes ask you to look at a diagram and match your curl pattern to letter-and-number codes. Some ask you to assess your hair's 'thickness' — which most people can't reliably judge — or describe your porosity based on a description you don't yet understand.

These quizzes are asking you to translate your hair's behavior into scientific language you don't speak yet. It's like asking someone to diagnose their own fever by describing their internal temperature in Celsius.

Behavioral questions work differently. They ask about things you've observed. Things you've felt. Things that happen to you in your bathroom every single wash day.

Does water absorb or bead? Does leave-in sink in or sit on top? How many days does your style last? What does a stretched wet strand do?

You know the answers to these questions. You've lived them. The quiz is just translating your lived experience into science.

The Five Questions

**Question 1: Water behavior.** How your hair responds to water in the shower is the first diagnostic signal. Water is the purest test of cuticle openness — no product variables, no styling interference. Just hair and water.

**Question 2: Leave-in behavior.** Products interact differently with cuticles at different states. A leave-in that absorbs instantly into one woman's hair will sit on another's for hours. Your leave-in behavior is a second data point that either confirms or complicates Question 1.

**Question 3: Style longevity.** How long your curls last is a retention test. High porosity hair loses moisture (and definition) within hours. Low porosity hair holds moisture for days. This question reads your retention score.

**Question 4: The stretch test.** Wet stretch behavior reveals your protein-moisture balance, which modifies the porosity reading. A strand that snaps under minimal stretch suggests a structural problem that changes how we interpret the other answers.

**Question 5: Protein response.** How you respond to protein treatments is the most direct way to assess your hair's current protein-moisture balance — do you need more structure, or more moisture?

Together, these five behavioral observations triangulate your hair's exact state. Not from a diagram. From your life.

The Adaptive 6th Question

In some cases — when the first five answers land in a gray zone, or when two questions contradict each other — the Hairodia diagnosis offers one more question. This happens in about 20% of cases.

The 6th question is simple and elegant: what does your hair feel like when it air-dries with absolutely no product?

Product-free air-drying reveals the hair's true porosity because there are no variables interfering. What you feel then is your hair, unmediated. And for most people, it's the clearest answer of all.

If you haven't taken the diagnosis yet, it's right here on the Hairodia Companion homepage. Five questions, behavioral, honest — and on the other side: your porosity profile and a regimen built specifically for how your hair actually behaves.
